America, Fuck Yeah! Imperial Red, Wheat and Blueberry Ale

Honestly, I was opposed to making the first official Brew Druid recipe a wheat ale.  I probably won’t ever post that opinion on the actual Brew Druid site, but it’s the truth.  As noted in an earlier post, a rather unremarkable discovery of an old home brew bottle cap was presented to me by my collaborator as an omen regarding the direction we should go with our brew project.  It was a green cap with an “A”.  See that former post for details but suffice to say that we could not find exactly which recipe that the cap came from.  In all likelihood, it was probably a wheat of some kind.  I’m all for cosmic intuition, false mysticism and other random bullshit playing a role in the Brew Druid project, but I’m not over the moon about wheat ales.  It is a rather bland start to a project that is supposed to be about innovation and creativity.  I made that clear to my partner.  I got little argument back.  He clearly wanted to follow his dumb ass omen but shared my opinion of wheat ales.

One of the potential recipes that it could have been was called America, Fuck Yeah! Red, Wheat and Blueberry ale.  It was a blueberry American style wheat.  Believing that the proposal to brew a wheat ale was behind us, I think I felt more comfortable talking about the old recipe with my collaborator.  One of the things we noted was that it probably should have had some roasted barley tossed in to add a little reddish color, therefore making it a red wheat.  Seemed so obvious.  In our imaginations, this concept of red wheat was almost immediately promoted to an imperial ale.  And here we are.

The first recipe it going to be some modification of the original concept, an evolution into America Fuck Yeah! Imperial Red, Wheat and Blueberry ale.  The more we talked about it the more we realized it would actually be a really good fit for the brew techniques we want to develop.  The satisfaction that my accomplice is enjoying now that his omen has born fruit is a little annoying though.
