Heavy Metal #300 – Lucy: Hope, Savage Circus
The first tale in Heavy Metal #300 is good. It’s called Lucy:Hope and it is set at the dawn of mankind. The artwork is fantastic. It is actually just the first chapter in a longer tale but it looks like it will be well done. Has a very epic feel about it. It is the kind of thing that fits right into Heavy Metal.
The second story is also a first chapter in a longer story, but this one is not off to as good a start. It is well drawn for sure, but the storyline is almost unreadable. It is about 23 pages of the magazine which begins when an American soldier in Vietnam stays to hunt a savage jungle bigfoot that killed some of his platoonmates. When he catches it he decides to use as an attraction in some sort of extreme circus. We are then carried away to some small town where we meet a police officer who lives with his mom and his younger brother. His father was once a cop in that same town, but now he’s dead. Oh yeah, it’s Christmas eve and the police chief’s daughter is the back in town from California where is is going to college to make something better for herself and eventually get away from small town life for good. She is the young cop’s love interest but the chief is warning him to stay away. We also meet the crazy mayor who is trying to fund raise for some big municipal project. The target is a million dollars and $800,000 has been raised so far. It is all apparently being kept in a giant metal piggy bank in the center of town. Plot twist! There is a gang of criminals that are looking to steal the piggy bank, heist style. The big plan is to use the big Christmas snow storm that is about to roll through town as cover. They are going to blow up a cell tower and the generators that power town. They’re also going to block the train tracks and the only road out of town. While town is crippled and without communication, they are going to steal the giant piggy bank. I did mention that there is $800,000 in it, right? Seems like a lot of trouble for that much money. There are six guys in the gang so they are going to have to split all that up. Then we close the chapter with the Vietnamese bigfoot heading into town on a train. Whew! The lack of imagination displayed so far makes me fairly certain that there will be a train accident and the bigfoot is going to escape. Are you kidding me here?
